About Pedernales Falls State Park Images
This gallery contains images from Pedernales Falls State Park, located between Dripping Springs and Johnson City on the Pedernales River in Blanco County in the Balcones Canyonlands region of the Texas Hill Country.
Pedernales Falls cascades over tilted, layered stair steps of limestone. This river limestone is 300 million years old. It is in the Marble Falls formation, and part of the southwestern flank of the Llano uplift. The uplift tilted these layers of limestone. Some 100 to 120 million years ago, early Cretaceous seas covered this part of the Texas Hill Country and deposited sands, gravels, younger limestone and marine fossils. Over time, these younger deposits eroded.
Before 1970, the area that is now Pedernales Falls State Park was a working ranch, known as the Circle Bar Ranch. The state of Texas purchased the land for the park in 1970, and the park opened in 1971.
